Daily Doses: Justin Vernon (Of Bon Iver) - Bruised Orange (Chain Of Sorrow) From Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs Of John Prine (2010)
John Prine is quite often referred to as a songwriter’s songwriter. In fact, when I was introduced to his catalog about five years ago, I believe that’s the exact line that was used to describe him. And although I’ve heard the term applied to him soamy times it’s become a cliche, it is true. Artists such as Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan have been quoted in referring to him as a contemporary they hold in the highest regard, and his album’s often adorn the racks of the most jaded of music and lyric snobs.
So it follows that his work would be treated with a good deal of reverence. In adding Prine to his list on his recent covers kick, Justin Vernon seems to prove that. His take on “Bruised Orange” (From the release of the same title) does not radically change the song, (keeping a similar folky strumy feel) although he still brings in those “recording down a well” tinges that make Vernon’s music so recognizable in all his projects.
I suppose as long as you’re covering older artists, you may as well take an old adage to heart.
“If it ain’t broke….”

Wilco - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
This song made me like music. This was the true “holy shit” moment. This was, without a question, it.
It made me like lyrics. It made me like the fact that you can have 4,239,875 things going on in a song in a single moment, and I can listen 4,239,875 times and hear them all separately. And everytime, it’ll just sound better. And better. And better.
This is my “put your headphones on and smile” scene at the end of Dazed and Confused.
I implore you to buy this album if you don’t own it. Plain and simple, flawless, front to back.
